There was a time where Google felt like a deep labyrinth: Google Places for Business, Google+ Local, Google Maps, just thinking about managing all these different platforms gave every local business a headache. It was a very time consuming task, having to log into different platforms to manage and track on all the activity and most important get found.
Luckily Google put an end to this mess back in June introducing a brand new platform for managing your business information on Google – Google My Business. You can now update your company details for Maps, Google+ and Search from one single platform saving you a lot of time.
The new interface is clear and easy to use and once connected to your AdWords and Google Analytics account, you will have a neat overview of everything that connects Google to your business. Plus you can now respond to reviews directly.
If you have been managing Google Places for Business and Google+ using the same email address, your accounts have most likely been updated to My Business automatically. However, if you have been using different accounts with different email addresses you need to make sure to merge/delete/update all accounts so they all link to Google My Business to optimise your search results. Duplicated entries and outdated details can leave the searching person confused and frustrated. Initially, setting My Business up might take some time, but you will soon benefit from synchronised and exact search results making it easier for your business to be found.
Businesses that have had agencies running their local marketing, SEO and SEM tend to have a few issues getting everything integrated. We know this as we’ve done this a number of times for our clients. So how do you sort it out?
The documentation here is pretty good. But to make it a touch easier make sure you go to the old places or maps page first then hit “Manage Business”. If a different email account has access to your other Google+ page make sure they are both managers of each page, then the instructions above work well. Get in contact if you have any issues.
You should now have a verified business linked to your Google+ page. Just remember it take a day or two for Google to remove the old Place/Maps page.
